Yoga

for the peace of mind

The word yoga was derived from the Sanskrit word yuj that means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. This union is not just basic physical contortions of the body through bending.

For instance, when you bend over to touch your toes and your nose touches your knees that cannot be called yoga in entirety. The union is the coming together of the mind and the body.

Dance

To add rhythm to your feet
One of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance, Kathak’s origin is traditionally attributed to the traveling bards of ancient northern Indian who were known as Kathakars or storytellers. The name derived from the Vedic Sanskrit word Katha meaning ‘story’, and Kathakar meaning ‘the narrator’, or ‘to do with stories’. The dancers of Kathak, whose ghungroo tied feet match rhythmically with the beat of the tabla and bol, tell stories through their hand movements and extensive footwork, their body movements and flexibility but most importantly through their facial expressions.

Sitar

to strengthen the core
The word sitar is derived from the Persian word Sehtar, meaning ‘three-stringed’. The instrument appears to have descended from long-necked lutes taken to India from Central Asia.
Flourishing in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sitar arrived at its present form in the 18th century. Today it is one of the dominant instruments in Hindustani music.

Piano

Piano also called pianoforte, French piano or pianoforte, German Klavier, a keyboard musical instrument having wire strings that sound when struck by felt-covered hammers operated from a keyboard.

The vibration of the strings is transmitted to a soundboard by means of a bridge over which the strings are stretched; the soundboard amplifies the sound and affects its tone quality. The hammers that strike the strings are affixed to a mechanism resting on the far ends of the keys; hammer and mechanism compose the “action.”

Flute

Belonging to the woodwind family, a tubular shaped instrument, that is played by blowing across a specially-shaped opening (known as the embouchure) in such a way as to produce a vibrating column of air whose pulsations we hear as sound.

Flutes are the earliest known identifiable musical instruments. The oldest flute ever discovered dates back to at least 35,000 years ago.

Tabla

The modern caretaker of an ancient rhythmic tradition that is perhaps 5000 years old.

The tabla is a set of two drums that are played while sitting on the floor. The larger drum, called Bayan, was originally made from clay, but is now constructed of metal (bras, steel, or copper). The Bayan is considered the bass drum of the set, but there is a tremendous range of expression possible by using certain techniques employed by a skilled drummer. The right-hand drum is called the Dahina, and is made of a seasoned hard wood and hollowed out like the Bayan.

Guitar

The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that typically has six strings. It is held flat against the player’s body and played by strumming or plucking the strings with the dominant hand, while simultaneously pressing selected strings against frets with the fingers of the opposite hand.

Guitar, plucked stringed musical instrument that probably originated in Spain early in the 16th century, deriving from the guitarra latina, a late-medieval instrument with a waisted body and four strings.
